Tips for Involving Toddlers in Newborn Photo Sessions

As a newborn photographer, I know welcoming a new baby is a huge change for the whole family, especially for toddlers so this post is packed full of tips. When it comes to an in-home newborn photography session, parents often worry about how their toddler will cope, whether they’ll join in, or if they’ll want nothing to do with it at all.

The good news? There’s no right or wrong way for toddlers to show up during a newborn session. With a little preparation and plenty of flexibility, involving your toddler can lead to the most beautiful, natural images of this fleeting chapter.

Here are my top tips for involving toddlers in newborn sessions in a calm, pressure-free way.

1. Talk About It Beforehand

Preparing your toddler ahead of time can make a big difference. Let them know that a lady is coming to their home to take some photos and that it will be relaxed and fun.

For some toddlers, it really helps to put a face to a name. Showing them a photo of me beforehand can make my arrival feel familiar rather than unexpected. This small step often helps toddlers feel more confident and involved from the start.

2. Make the Most of the Novelty Factor

Those first 30 to 40 minutes after I arrive are often golden. The novelty of having someone new in the house is usually at its peak, and toddlers are often curious and keen to be involved.

Being ready for the start of your session time means we can get going straight away and make full use of this window, capturing sibling moments while engagement is naturally high.

3. Prepare the Newborn Photoshoot Environment

A calm space really supports connection. Having the TV off from the beginning of the session helps keep things grounded and encourages natural interaction.

It’s also a great idea to have a few small snacks to hand. Simple options like raisins or Pom Bears (out of the packet) are perfect for keeping energy levels up without too much disruption.

4. Let Toddlers Go at Their Own Pace

Some toddlers dive straight in and want to cuddle their new sibling immediately. Others prefer to observe quietly from a distance before joining in. Both responses are completely normal.

There’s never any rush. We’ll always work at your toddler’s pace and gently follow their lead throughout the session.

5. Be Flexible

After that initial novelty-filled half hour, some toddlers need a little break. This is often the perfect time to focus on newborn portraits and capture images with each parent individually.

More often than not, once toddlers see what’s going on without them, their curiosity brings them back into the frame. We stay flexible and go with how they’re feeling in the moment.

6. No Pressure For Toddlers To Perform

There’s absolutely no expectation for toddlers to behave in a certain way. Some love cuddling their new baby sibling, while others prefer simple gestures like holding baby’s hand or giving a gentle kiss.

The most meaningful images come from allowing toddlers to be exactly who they are, without any pressure. Authentic connection always wins.

Being photographed in their own space helps toddlers feel safe and secure. In-home newborn sessions allow children to move freely, take breaks when needed, and return when they’re ready.

This sense of comfort is often what leads to the most beautiful, natural photos of your lovely family!
