I recently visited this lovely family at their home in Kenilworth for a relaxed in home newborn photoshoot. We captured those early days with their beautiful new baby. Their toddler son felt very proud of his new role as big brother. That made the session even more special!
The morning was full of big brother cuddles, lovely family moments and a little bit of bed jumping too.

Why Does an In Home Newborn Photoshoot Work So Well?
An in home newborn photoshoot works beautifully because it immediately feels relaxed. You are in your own space and surrounded by everything you need. This is especially helpful in those early days when you are very much in your newborn bubble.
Leaving the house with a newborn can feel like an event in itself. There are baby bags to pack, car seats to organise and prams to load into the car. And that is all before the session even begins! At home everything is already there. Nappies, wipes, spare outfits and blankets are always within easy reach.
Home sessions also work wonderfully when there is a toddler involved. This newborn photoshoot in Kenilworth was a perfect example of that. Toddlers feel comfortable straight away in their own environment. It is their safe space and the place they know best. That means there is no need for a long warm up period in an unfamiliar setting. They have their room, their toys and their favourite books nearby. If they want a change of scene, we simply move to another room. If they need a little break, they can wander off for a snack before joining us again.

A Kenilworth Newborn Photoshoot with a Toddler Sibling
Whenever I photograph a newborn session with a toddler sibling, I approach it the same way. The toddler leads the session.
There is often a sweet spot during the first forty minutes. The novelty of a new person in the house is still high at this point. I always use this window to capture family photos and sibling moments. For sibling photos, I follow the toddler’s lead. Some toddlers love cuddling their new baby brother or sister. Others prefer a gentle hand hold or a little kiss. Nothing is ever forced. I keep everything flexible and relaxed. This helps toddlers interact with the baby in a way that feels natural to them. Often the sofa or the bed becomes the perfect spot for these moments. Everyone can snuggle together comfortably and safely.

Natural Newborn Photography at Home
During these sessions, I use the natural light in your home to create relaxed photographs. The aim is always to capture moments that feel natural and real. Rather than posing everything, we move around your home and use spaces where the light works well. Sometimes I give a gentle prompt to guide the moment. For example, I might ask a toddler, “Can you count all of baby’s fingers?”
Other times the moment simply unfolds on its own.
During family photos I sometimes move closer for portraits of the baby being cuddled. At other times I step back and photograph the whole scene. I also bring a beanbag with me. This creates a cosy spot for some relaxed baby portraits near the best window light.

Favourite Moments from This Kenilworth Newborn Session
When I first arrived at the house in Kenilworth, we started by getting to know everyone. This is especially important when there is a toddler involved. It helps them feel comfortable before we begin. We began the session in the family’s beautiful open plan kitchen. The space was bright and full of natural light. The sofa quickly became the perfect place for some relaxed family photos. It was also the ideal spot for some very sweet sibling moments.
After that we headed upstairs. Big brother happily showed off his excellent bed bouncing skills. He also introduced me to two other family members. These came in the form of some extremely fluffy bunnies! After a little burst of energy, we slowed things down again with a favourite story. During this moment, mum and baby popped into the nursery with me. We captured a few quiet portraits together. These calmer moments are often some of my favourites.
Next we moved into another bedroom for more family photos. Big brother loved standing on a stool so he could be the same height as everyone else. This made the interaction between the whole family feel very natural. By this point we had already captured lots of beautiful family photos. It was time for a little snack break for big brother.
While he took a break, I set up a cosy space on the beanbag. This allowed me to capture some relaxed baby portraits in the soft window light. Big brother could not stay away for long though. Before long he wandered back over and joined us again. That led to a few more lovely sibling moments to finish the session.

Planning Your Own In Home Newborn Photoshoot
If you are planning to document this special chapter, it is best to book your in home newborn photoshoot around the 20 week mark of pregnancy. We will place a tentative date in the diary. Once your baby arrives, we can pull your sessions forwards or push it back as needed.
If you love very sleepy newborn portraits, the first two weeks can work beautifully. However, the beauty of a relaxed newborn session is that it can happen at many stages. The focus stays on natural family moments rather than traditional posing.
